Montreal is home to three major professional sports teams.
Le Club de hockey Canadien de Montréal dates back to 1909. It was one of the most successful professional sports teams of the 20th century, having brought home 24 Stanley Cups between 1916 and 1993. Please see our Canadiens page for more details.
The team – also known as the Habs – is part of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The team marked its centennial at the beginning of December 2009.
The NHL hockey season starts with training camp and pre-season games in September. The regular season begins in October and runs till April, with the Stanley Cup playoffs finishing up in June. The Montreal Alouettes play in the East Division of the Canadian Football League. The annual championship is called the Grey Cup and the regular season is from July to November.
The Alouettes last won the Grey Cup in 2010.
The Alouettes play downtown at Molson Stadium, on Pine Avenue (avenue des Pins) beside McGill University. Major playoff games would be held at the Olympic stadium.
